Susie remembered the great storm of 1987. A huge tree had been struck by
lightening and fallen across the road. It had taken the villagers all morning to clear
the tree to open the road.
Power lines came down and the village had been without electricity for three days.
The Fire Service had advised everyone to use torches instead of candles to light
their rooms as candles can be a fire hazard.
Before the arrival of the electricity company, the villagers placed cones near to the
fallen power lines to keep people at a safe distance. People were then warned to
stay away from the area whilst the workers were mending the fallen power lines as
the electricity might still be live.
Farmer Bone, who had electricity generators for the farm had taken one down to
the village Hall so that Mrs Bone could still run the playgroup. Mrs Banks, turned
up with her battery powered radio so that they could listen to the local news. She
also made tea for everyone. Soon word got around that there was tea, cake and a
friendly chat for anyone stranded with no electricity.
